Swim Lessons

2009 Sessions

First Session: June 1 to June 12
Second Session: June 15 to June 26
Third Session: June 29 to July 10
Forth Session: July 13 to July 24
Fifth Session: July 27 to August 7

Lessons begin at 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and change every1/2 hour.

Each family is entitled to one free sessions per child.
Additional sessions cost $15.00 payable at the time of signup.

LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS:

Level 1: "Mommy and Me"

Learning Objectives:
Become oriented and comfortable to the aquatic environment
Fully submerge face for at least 3 seconds
Experience buoyancy and demonstrate basic breath control
Demonstrate supported floating and kicking on front and back
Enter and exit water independently
Become familiar with alternating arm action
Learn basic water safety rules-familiar with ways to get help
Demonstrate reaching assists without equipment
Become familiar with the fundamentals of using a life jacket
Go all the way under with support
Bob to chin level holding on wall 10 times
Walk 5 yards or along the wall for 5 yards


Level 2: Primary Skills

Learning Objectives:
Fully submerge head for at least 3 seconds
Retrieve underwater objects
Do at least 10 bobs
Explore deep water with support
Demonstrate unsupported front and back float or glide
Level off from a vertical position
Demonstrate rhythmic breathing
Demonstrate step-in entry and side exit
Perform flutter kick on front and back
Perform combined stroke on front and back
Demonstrate turning over, back to front and front to back
Float in life jacket with face out of water
Perform reaching and extension assists from deck
Become familiar with rescue breathing


Level 3:Stroke Readiness

Learning Objectives:
Retrieve object, unsupported, with eyes open
Demonstrate bobbing at least 15 times – submerging head
Bob in water slightly over head to travel to a safe area
Jump into deep water from side of pool with life jacket on
Learn the basic rules of safe diving
Dive from the side of the pool in kneeling and compact position
Demonstrate gliding with push-off
Coordinate the components of the front crawl and back crawl
Demonstrate the fundamentals of elementary backstroke Demonstrate the fundamentals of treading water
Reverse direction while swimming on front and back
Become familiar with the H.E.L.P. and huddle positions for 1 minute
Learn how to open airway for rescue breathing


Level 4:
Stroke Development

Learning Objectives:
Demonstrate deep-water bobbing
Demonstrate rotary/alternate breathing
Dive from the side of the pool from stride and standing positions
Build endurance by swimming elementary backstroke, front crawl, back crawl, at 25-50 yards
Learn the basics of breaststroke, sidestroke, and turning at the wall
Learn alternate kicks for treading water
Learn rescue-breathing techniques
Become familiar with CPR
Floating in deep water unsupported
Tread water for 2 minutes
Learn dolphin kick


Level 5: Stroke Refinement and Diving

Learning Objectives:
Demonstrate approach and hurdle on the diving board
Perform springboard dives in tuck and pike positions
Learn the basic safety rules for diving for diving from a board
Retrieve diving brick from 8-10 feet of water
Recognize the signs of a spinal injury
Assist with backboard rescue
Introduce flip turns for all strokes
Perform front crawl 100 yards
Perform back crawl 100 yards
Perform breaststroke 50 yards
Perform sidestroke 50 yards
Introduce fundamentals of butterfly
